Gluten-free dinner at the ‘Camino de Santiago’

At the Albergue Sansol (Navarra), the pilgrim’s dinner is naturally gluten-free: salad, Valencian paella, dessert and wine. The exception is the bread, which we serve gluten-free on request at no extra cost. We also cater for individual vegetarian and vegan options.

Just to be clear: we are not a 100% gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan hostel. We cater for individual dietary requirements as part of the communal pilgrim’s dinner. If you’re coming with a group where EVERYONE requires the same special diet, please contact us before booking.

Gluten-free

The pilgrim’s dinner, course by course

This is exactly what you’ll be having for dinner as a pilgrim at Albergue Sansol. All the ingredients are naturally gluten-free.

Garden salad

A mix of lettuce, olives, carrots, beetroot, cherry tomatoes and sweetcorn. Dressed with olive oil and vinegar. It never contains tuna.

Homemade Valencian paella

A traditional recipe with rice, chicken, green beans and garrofón beans. No wheat or flour.

Dessert

Always free from biscuits and cakes containing gluten.

Young red wine

A young red wine from the region. Gluten-free by definition.

About bread

The bread served as standard at the table contains gluten.

If you have coeliac disease or an intolerance, we can provide gluten-free bread separately at no extra cost. Please let us know when you make your booking or as soon as you arrive, and we’ll have it ready for you.

For coeliacs with high sensitivity or a strict diagnosis: our kitchen prepares dinner using gluten-free ingredients, but it is not certified as a cross-contamination-free kitchen. If you need to confirm specific protocols, please call us on 948 648 473 before booking. We prefer to be honest rather than raise false expectations.

Vegetarian

Individual vegetarian options

If you’re here on a pilgrimage and are vegetarian, we can prepare a single portion for you, replacing the traditional paella with a vegetarian alternative (a selection of salads, stir-fried vegetables, pasta or omelette, subject to availability). We’ll provide this without prior notice; if you let us know 24 hours in advance, we can prepare something more substantial.

We are unable to prepare a full dinner for entire groups of vegetarians: our kitchen caters for a non-vegetarian majority and we deal with individual requests as they arise.

Vegan

Vegan options (please enquire in advance)

We cater for individual vegan requests. Please do let us know 24 hours in advance when making your booking so that we can prepare something suitable for you (vegan salad without eggs, vegetables and pulses, depending on the day). Without prior notice, we can provide you with salad and fruit, but the choice will be more limited.

We are not a vegan hostel: the standard dinner contains meat. We only cater for individual requests from our guests.

Frequently asked questions about special diets

The questions we’re asked most often by pilgrims with coeliac disease, vegetarians and vegans.

Is the pilgrim’s dinner at the ‘Albergue Sansol’ gluten-free?

Our dinner menu is naturally gluten-free: salad, homemade Valencian paella, dessert and wine — all the ingredients are naturally gluten-free. The exception is the bread served as standard at the table, which contains gluten. We provide gluten-free bread separately at no extra cost for those with coeliac disease; simply let us know when you book or on arrival.

Is it safe for coeliacs with high sensitivity?

Our kitchen prepares dinner using naturally gluten-free ingredients, but it is not a certified cross-contamination-free kitchen. For those with extreme sensitivities, we recommend calling us on 948 648 473 before booking to clarify any queries regarding food handling. We prefer to be honest rather than raise false expectations.

Do I need to let people know that I’m coeliac?

It isn’t strictly necessary, as the dinner is already gluten-free by nature, but we do recommend you let us know so that we can have gluten-free bread ready for you. If you don’t let us know, you’ll still be served a completely gluten-free dinner (we’ll serve it without bread or with your own choice of bread).

Is a gluten-free dinner more expensive?

No. Dinner costs exactly the same (€16) and the bed and dinner package costs the same too (€32). We do not charge extra for serving gluten-free bread or for preparing a gluten-free menu.

Do you have any vegetarian options?

Yes, we cater for individual vegetarians. If you turn up unannounced, we’ll still provide you with an alternative (salads, vegetables, pasta or omelette, subject to availability). With 24 hours’ notice, we can prepare something a bit more elaborate. We are not a vegetarian hostel — we cater for individual pilgrims amongst our guests.

Do you have any vegan options?

Yes, but we recommend letting us know 24 hours in advance when you book so that we can prepare something suitable (vegan salad, vegetables, pulses). Without prior notice, we’ll provide a salad and fruit, but the choice will be more limited. It’s not a full vegan menu — it’s simply individual catering for a vegan pilgrim within the group.

Can you cater for an entire group with specific dietary requirements?

No. Our kitchen prepares a pilgrim’s dinner for all guests, and we cater for individual dietary requirements (coeliac, vegetarian, vegan). If you’re travelling with a group where EVERYONE requires the same special diet, we recommend that you contact us in advance to see if this is feasible, or look for other, more specialised accommodation.

What exactly does the pilgrim’s dinner include?

Garden salad, homemade Valencian paella (minimum 5 guests — please enquire about availability for groups smaller than this), dessert of the day and local wine. Unlimited bread (gluten-containing by default; gluten-free on request). €16 for dinner only or €32 for the bed and dinner package.

Are there any other gluten-free hostels on the Camino?

Very few places guarantee a fully gluten-free menu. Albergue Sansol is one of the few on the French Way that prepares a gluten-free pilgrim’s dinner as standard (not as a separate option, but as a standard recipe). This allows you to dine with the rest of the group without having to ask for anything special — except for the bread, which we serve as a separate gluten-free option if you need it.
